About Bolivia

Print this panel email to a friend

Bolivia is a country of great natural wealth and diversity; it boasts some of the world’s greatest mountain ranges largely unexplored by modern tourism. The culture of the country is still primarily rural and reflects a style of life little changed since the Spanish Invasion. The Quimza Cruz Mountains are little visited although historically they have been exploited for their rich mineral deposits and are at present being exploited in a small way for their hydro-electrical potential.

"This very beautiful mountain range is still considered the future of Bolivian mountaineering because it is difficult to reach and few people make the effort to get there." Footprint guide on Quimza Cruz area.

Charity Trek in the Bolivian Andes

Without any doubt the Quimsa Cruz mountain range provides a microcosm of the Andes mountains. Summits cloaked in perpetual snows, long sweeping glaciers, enormous granite peaks (a rock climber's paradise), multi-coloured lakes, mountain valleys boasting deep gorges and high altitude woodlands, old tin mines, an immense variety of birds and plants and the mystical atmosphere of the Andes, all combine to make this an unforgettable trek.

Climb Bolivian Summits

Led by Simon Yates of 'Touching the Void' fame. The Cordillera Real is close to La Paz and is home to countless alpine peaks at moderate to high altitude. It is possible to climb four major peaks in three weeks due to the ease of access and Bolivia’s stable mountain weather. This expedition culminates in the ascents of Huyana Potosi and Illimani.

The first two days are spent acclimatising around La Paz, as well as sightseeing in this beautiful city we will also visit the Altiplano ancient Inca ruins and Lake Titicaca. Then we trek along the Cordillera to the Condoriri Base camp, which is surrounded by some of the most beautiful peaks in the area. From this base camp we will climb Little Illusion (5,250 m), which is a straightforward peak before attempting the more challenging Little Alpamayo (5,350 m).

Once acclimatised, we turn our attention towards Huyana Potosi (6,088 m) and Illimani (6,463 m). Both of these peaks require a single high altitude camp. The summit days provide inspiring and sometimes exposed climbing with stunning views stretching from Peru across to the Amazon Basin.
