NAMIBIA PROJECT

2-9 October 2009

ATD will help to refurbish a community project, and to regenerate the local community.

Namibia is one of the few places on earth where the natural environment rules supreme. It is a country where one is able to experience the sense of primeval freedom that is impossible elsewhere. It is a beautiful setting, with ample opportunities to explore, climb, abseil, or discover the ancient Bushman paintings whilst enjoying the clear desert air and star-bathed night skies.

The community at Spitzkoppe consists mainly of Damara speaking people. They are predominately extensive livestock farmers that eke out a living in the very harsh environment that borders the Namib Desert, to the south of the Brandberg, which at 2,370m is the highest mountain in Namibia.

The area is vast and children can travel a long way, primarily by foot, to attend the Khorab Primary School, which offers hostel facilities that can accommodate up to 200 pupils. The Government supports the area by providing water and mains electricity but this is all they contribute, with very little support or money from the Government going to maintain or provide supplies for the school.

Subsequently the school and the community find it very hard to cope with the costs and maintenance required for learning and education.

Whilst some previous renovations have been done to the school buildings they are in a state of disrepair, and of real benefit to the local community and children would be to complete some general renovations to improve the learning environment.

ITINERARY Download full itinerary

  • Day 1- Fly to Windhoek.
  • Day 2 - Transfer from Windhoek to the project, where we will be met by the expedition leader and board our coaches for a transfer to the Spitzkoppe community settlements, at the foot of the huge granite outcrops. In the evening we will meet some of our local hosts.
  • Day 3 - 6 - Leaving our campsite we will walk about 2 kilometres to the project site, where we will meet the school committee and the local chief. After introductions and a formal project briefing, we will begin our work. During the day we have the opportunity to mix with the locals and understand more about their culture and community before returning to our camp for the evening.

Day 7 - On the final day of the project we have an official opening ceremony in the afternoon with all of the community and children present before celebrating a job well done at our lodge for the evening.

  • Day 8 - Today we enjoy a game drive in the local area, with hopefully a chance to spot the famous Namibian desert elephant, before transferring to the airport early evening for our return flight home.
  • Day 9 - Windhoek to London.
